Nine Inch Nails, or Why I Turned Out This Way

So, I posted the Closer music video last week and promised a whole lot more words about Nine Inch Nails. Now is the time. Be prepared.

So I was introduced to Nine Inch Nails through the good offices of my teenaged step-sister when I was a wee lass—somewhere around the age of 8. The video for Closer was out, and I saw it then. It apparently didn’t occur to anyone involved that the lyrics were highly problematic for a 7/8-year-old girl to have stuck in her head. I’m actually kind of glad of that, ultimately. I love Nine Inch Nails. I think Closer is a really poorly understood song; at least, it’s very poorly understood by the frat boys who decide to sing it at karaoke, and by a lot of average folks whose only exposure to NIN is that song. It’s the song that introduced me to the textural kind of mixed-media artwork that is NIN, and the lyrical density that Trent Reznor brings to his work. “I want to fuck you like an animal” is not a good thing—it’s desperation, it’s addiction. It’s physical need like a hunger, like thirst. It’s needing that act in order to forget everything else in the world that exists. And the rawness of the song, the deep sexiness of it, is sordid but not exactly dirty. And of course the video. The video is so terribly fascinating—I think that’s actually exactly the right phrase. It’s a very loaded, very complicated video. It draws you to stare at it the way you’d stare at a wound in your own flesh—horrified and compelled. It’s the perfect embodiment of the song.

Another song I absolutely love is Gave Up. I love the video for it, though I didn’t even see the video until fairly recently, because it captures another thing I enjoy so much in Trent Reznor’s music: the intensely uncomfortable tension. The Strokes’ music has a kind of city-bred tension, an external pressure; the tension in so much of the NIN discography is an inside experience. There’s something about Trent Reznor’s lyrics and musical precision that makes it feel as if he’s holding an explosion inside of himself. Everything is balanced on the edge of a razor—the barest breath would set it askew. And I have a huge amount of respect for that kind of musical acumen. When I listen to Nine Inch Nails, it’s like looking at a very well-done piece of mixed media artwork—it’s easy to do that kind of art very poorly, and very difficult to make it work and do something entirely new. One of the things I also love about NIN is Trent Reznor’s voice; it’s a beautifully dark color, charcoal-like but with an iridescent sheen like oil.

I spent a few years not really considering or listening to NIN and then sometime in middle school I came into proper influences again, and they reminded me. We’re In This Together was my re-introduction to Trent Reznor, and the first song that I heard off of The Fragile. It’s still one of my favorite songs of all time—not just NIN songs, songs in general. Lyrically it has a lot of structure without beating you over the head with it. It’s a great study in parallel structure, if you’re inclined to literary analysis. It’s also just such a great song; it’s a desperate love song, a hungry song. “The further I fall, I’m beside you/ as lost as I get I will find you/ The deeper the wound I’m inside you/ forever and ever I am a part of you…and me, we’re in this together now…” It’s not even a love song in the affectionate sense. It’s twisted, and bitter. I will always have deep feelings for this song.

Also from The Fragile, The Frail/The Wretched. I’m including a live version here, because it works so very well live. The Fragile is, to me, one of the most amazing albums that exists. These two songs kind of demonstrate my point generally; The Frail is the introduction to what’s referred to as “The Fragile motif,” a chromatic trick that plays out across the album in a few different songs. Everything about The Fragile is so well thought out, so thoroughly sewn together.

I have way more words about Nine Inch Nails, but these will have to suffice for now. One of these days I’ll do a track-by-track of The Fragile; I need to understand music a lot better before I’m capable of it, though.
